Already a significant European success with millions of You Tube hits for their single "Little Numbers", this Swiss/German duo of instrumentalist Sonja Glass and singer Valeska Steiner are rather like a female version of Kings of Convenience, harnessing wry intelligence to reliable pop charm.

Eventually Sonja began emailing instrumental tracks to Valeska, who then worked on lyrics and melodies for the songs that appealed most before they refined them together.

This still presented problems when it came to live performance.

Remarkably, it's never depressing, instead offering a genuine warmth and comfort that's hard to fake.

Much of the record focuses on goodbyes and new starts, subjects that were close to Valeska's heart as she settled into her new home.

But Sonja had known from the first moment they played together that, were she to form a band of her own, Valeska would have to be the singer. Finally, in 2008, she received an email from Valeska suggesting they give collaboration a try. By then, Valeska had moved to Hamburg, and though they now lived in the same city, they still needed to find their way of working together.

Nonetheless, they began performing shows to small crowds as a duo, starting out in modest clubs in Switzerland and Germany, taking the train to shows, or borrowing a car from Valeska's mother.

They read books over tea, They give tips when they pay.

Well daylight is fading While traders are trading While the jukebox is playing The lovers are dating, The waitress is waiting For a thing to explode, For a light to go on, For some sign to show Her time has yet to come. She's counting: two, three, four, five And every minute feels Just like the one before No surprise, no twist She wants so much more Well daylight is fading While traders are trading While the jukebox is playing The lovers are dating, The waitress is waiting For a thing to explode, For a light to go on, For some sign to show The best is yet to come. She's counting: two, three, four, five When will that thing explode When will that light go on Just to assure her she's not wrong.

Given the reactions at shows, however, they knew they had an audience, and Anglo-German label Groenland finally stepped into the breach.
